Genesis
23:1-25:18 - Hayei Sarah/The Life of Sarah Sarah is 93 years old. She is both ancient
and beautiful. She has endured the pain of being barren and childless her entire life. She stands at the threshold of her
tent. Her husband, Abraham, is just outside, conversing with three "messengers." She overhears the angels tell Abraham,
that within a year, Sarah will give birth to a son. The painting depicts the moment Sarah hears the prophecy.
She feels a quickening and a rush of exquisite joy. Sarah instinctively clutches her breast and womb. The baby, who will be Isaac, is already forming in the folds of her garment and imagination.
"...the
womb of the elders brings forth the new era..." Jean Houston
